If you are involved in an auto accident...
No one expects to be in an accident. That's why such occurrences are called accidents - an unexpected, unfortunate situation in which one is rarely prepared. However, even the most careful drivers may be involved in an auto accident. Knowledge of what to do after an auto accident can make the experience a little less frightening and decrease the chance of unnecessary complications:
- Stop immediately, but do not obstruct traffic.
- Turn ignition off, guard against fire.
- Assist injured, then call police. This is very important as insurance companies use the police accident report as the basis of their investigation.
- Exchange information with the other partycopy from driver's license, registration (in Indiana the insurance company and policy number is on the registration), and the license plate.
- If there are witnesses, get their name, address, and phone number.
- Do not admit fault.
- Call your insurance agent as soon as conveniently possible to report the accident.
