Purchasing a Vehicle to Export

Here is some extensive information on the purchase of vehicles in the United States. This information is not considered "official information of AAA" but rather, information graciously given by one of our managing directors who worked in Detroit for many years.

We hope this information will be of some assistance to you while you consider "purchasing" a vehicle:

What is the best way to purchase a vehicle in the United States?
On any vehicle to be purchased, a pre-arranged sale and return to the selling dealer would be best. "CarMax" might be a reputable/safe solution for international buyers: Website: www.CarMax.com

As a tourist, is it easy to buy a car from USA?
This is not problem as long as you have access to certified U.S. funds.  Cash transactions greater than $10,000 will not be acceptable; wire transfer or certified bank check preferred. Acquiring the vehicle title may take time and will be required to make the sale, regardless of the state of issue. Purchasing a vehicle from a private party with title in hand will speed the process. Secure a notarized bill of sale from any private party transaction. It is advisable to do research on vehicle values via www.Edmonds.com  or www.NADA.com  prior to any purchase.

After driving all around the United States for 3 months, is it easy to sell the car in a same state or another state? You can sell the vehicle to an agency such as CarMax, or a private party, or at a same-make- vehicle dealer. Expect a wholesale (not retail) offer from any dealer or CarMax. Do the research on value first - this is important!  Private party sales may take 45 days or longer based on the current market; be prepared to wait. Consider a pre-arranged sale back to the selling dealer. This is possible (and probably best in the case of visiting international visitors) to request.

Are motor vehicles of all types, including used cars, easily bought in the United States from various outlets.
Yes!

Is vehicle insurance of some form compulsory throughout the United States?
Your current insurance may cover this vehicle for 3 months for a fee; inquire with your own insurance agency before leaving your country. If you need other international insurance information please see below for further contact information on two international insurance companies (again, not officially recommended by AAA, but given for informational purposes only).
