Phoenix, Ariz., April 9, 2009. Across the state, motorists can put a few more eggs in their Easter basket this year as the price of fuel remains stable and significantly less than prices this time last year. Statewide, motorists are paying an average of $1.928 for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline, a decrease of more than one cent from last week and $1.359 lower than this time last year. East Valley drivers are paying the state’s lowest fuel price with an average of $1.836 per gallon, while Flagstaff drivers continue to pay the state’s highest price with an average of $2.140 per gallon. The nationwide average increased slightly this week by less than a penny to $2.051.
This week, oil prices continued to trade in the low $50 per barrel range. This is a pattern the commodity has followed for the past couple of weeks, as investors try to discern the direction of the US and global economies, and has resulted in continued fuel price stabilization.
“Arizona motorists will likely continue to enjoy stable pump prices through the holiday weekend and beyond,” said Linda Gorman, director of public affairs for AAA Arizona. “Our fuel prices continue to be among the lowest in the nation, with only eight states paying less than Arizona for fuel. Given current market conditions, this is a pattern that will likely continue in the coming weeks.”
The cheapest gasoline in the lower 48 states can be found in South Carolina, where unleaded regular is $1.909 per gallon. California motorists are continuing to pay the most for fuel in the country with an average of $2.339 per gallon.

*The BTU-adjusted price of E-85 is the nationwide average price of E-85 adjusted to reflect the lower energy content as expressed in British Thermal Units - and hence miles per gallon - available in a gallon of E-85 as compared to the same volume of conventional gasoline. The BTU-adjusted price calculated by OPIS and AAA is not an actual retail average price paid by consumers. It is calculated and displayed as part of AAA's Fuel Gauge Report because according to the Energy Information Administration E-85 delivers approximately 25 percent fewer BTUs by volume than conventional gasoline. Because "flexible fuel" vehicles can operate on conventional fuel and E-85, the BTU-adjusted price of E-85 is essential to understanding the cost implications of each fuel choice for consumers.
