A: Every year the timing is different, but normally September 20 to October 5 covers the height of the aspen display in Colorado. The timeframe depends on several factors, including the amount of rainfall, the strength of winds and overnight temperatures. The drought conditions in our state this year may force the color change earlier, and leaves might not stay on as long as usual. Altitude also plays a role, so color will vary depending on where the grove is on the mountain. Early patches of color show up near the top of the mountain then spread down the slope. Luckily for us, not all of the state turns "peak color" at the same time, so there is ample time to enjoy the gold! Do I need an International Driving Permit? A: Yes, it is required. Your U.S. license is only recognized in Germany when presented with a German translation. The International Drivers Permit (IDP) fulfills this requirement. Basically, the IDP is an interpretation of your U.S. driver's license, and can be used as an additional form of identification. Designed to be used in conjunction with your regular license, an IDP is not legally required in most countries to drive there; however, many car rental companies require one to rent a vehicle in a foreign country. Therefore, AAA always recommends IDPs to people traveling abroad. You will need to fill out a short form and provide two passport photos (available at AAA for $7). You must be age 18 or older and have a U.S. license that will be valid during your trip. If your U.S. license expires while you are out of the country, your IDP is no longer valid. What exactly does this mean, and what is not included? A: With regard to vacations to Cancún and many other areas in the Mayan Riviera, the all-inclusive option varies depending on the facilities available at each resort. A basic inclusive package provides all meals, snacks and unlimited domestic beverages. An "all inclusive" might also include evening entertainment and nonmotorized watersports, or use of a fitness center. Several large chain resorts allow reciprocal use of their properties, but transportation to these other hotels is often not included. If you're planning a stay at a spa/resort, massage and spa treatments are also at your own expense unless otherwise advertised. Overall, all-inclusive vacations are a great value and extremely convenient. —Dana Blackwell, travel consultant, Littleton Questions may be e-mailed to ask@colorado.aaa.com or faxed to 303-300-7710.
