Making a Life-Saving Difference

O
ne evening my family and I saw a TV program telling how a large percentage of auto accidents resulted in being trapped inside.

I remembered seeing a device used for breaking out windshields and cutting seat belts in emergency situations. I decided to purchase one for each of our two cars…I looked everywhere, but could not find one.

Maybe two months [went] by when we were at AAA [and]…I happened to see the Life Hammer. I bought two of them.

The next day I took my family to breakfast. We brought the Life Hammer in with us and read the directions. After breakfast…about three hours later, we were driving down...I-225... when we saw a car that had just flipped over onto its roof.

We quickly pulled over, as had about three or four other cars, to help out. I grabbed my new Life Hammer…the people inside the car could not get the doors open and a large man was frantically trying to kick the side window out with no success. I handed him the Life Hammer and told him to tap lightly on the window. Well, he did and the window just seemed to instantly disappear. Everyone cheered. Three people, including an infant, were then pulled safely from the car.

Every car should have a Life Hammer!

Close Pin Ties

L
aura Daily's article on "The Pin" took my breath away. You see, my family was, and still is, a skating family. My younger brother is Tim Wood, '68 Silver Olympian who trained at the Broadmoor. We all knew coach Bill Swallender and some of the skaters who perished. At the time, Tim was a 12-year-old aspiring skater and the loss of Doug Ramsey and his coach was a real blow to all of us.

Knowing the Facts Might Save Lives

I
know you share my concern [about]…auto fatalities/injuries in which the car occupants were not using seat belts.

A couple of years ago I expressed my concern to the local police and asked, "Why don't you tabulate/publicize this situation?"…Their answer was that they have the statistics, but for some reason the newspapers won't publish them. So I'm turning to AAA where you have both local and national clout.

May I suggest you sponsor a nationwide drive to publicize the seat belt problem and provide statistics [to the papers]?…In addition to newspapers, the schools should be brought into the picture to influence our young people...

Editor's Note: Mr. Harris' idea is a good one. In fact, it's part of AAA National's upcoming legislative campaign.

Eagle Eyes Correct Bird's-Eye View

I
just finished reading the article on Florence, Italy, in the January/February issue. Florence is my favorite city in Europe…. While admiring the photograph on page 29…I realized the image is reversed. The Arno River flows toward the east and, being in the northern hemisphere, the sun crosses the sky in the south, therefore, shadows would cover the southern edge of the river…
Timothy Bouvia, via e-mail

In the January/February article, "Uncovering the Secrets of Florence," the photo of Florence has been reversed!…The Corridoio Vasariano must be at right to be the correct view.
Ernesto Kemper, Lakewood

Editor's Note: What a great catch! Surprisingly, the Italian Government Tourist Board provided the photo mounted in the position that we took to be correct.
