Fascinating Reminder
AAA is proud to join General Motors, State Farm Companies Foundation, the U.S. Department of Transportation, the History Channel and six other associations and foundations in support of the Smithsonian's new exhibition, "America on the Move."
Although Americans have always been on the move, few pause to consider the role transportation has played in our nation's history and how it has influenced our everyday lives.
That's the purpose of America on the Move, which opens Nov. 22 at the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History in Washington, D. C.
A major venture for the museum, the exhibition promises to transport visitors back in time, immersing them in the sights, sounds and sensations of evolving transportation. More than a dozen historical vignettes will showcase the already popular collection of large trains and trucks, classic cars and other modes of transportation.
In this multimedia show, visitors will see how railroads helped shift trade centers away from coastal towns and how streetcars and automobiles helped shape today's communities. The settings also show ways in which growing acceptance of the automobile gave rise to the demand for hotels and tourist attractions and how the growth of the U.S. highway system affected population growth and spurred travel from coast to coast.
The funding AAA and other sponsors are providing made possible a complete renovation of the museum's Hall of Transportation, the new exhibition, national educational and public programs, and a website.
Officials of the museum, one of the 10 most visited in the world, say that while those displays are among the most viewed, America on the Move could become one of the most popular.
That's understandable. Transportation affects where we live, work and play. And, America on the Move-along with the 100th anniversary of the Wright brothers' first engine-powered flight on Dec. 17—is a timely reminder of that simple fact.
