How to find complete list of AAA partners

In the President's Message in the July/August issue, the President of AAA Colorado stated that one of the partners in the Show Your Card & Save program was "airlines." I looked at the Show Your Card & Save ad on pages 38 and 39, but all it shows is a discount on parking near DIA.
Ann Marie Damian, via e-mail

Editor's Note: While it's true that there is no airline listed in the Show Your Card & Save ad, that ad is only a partial list of AAA's Show Your Card & Save partners. AAA does have a partnership with Aloha Airlines and it is listed in the 2003 Show Your Card & Save Savings Guide that is available at every Colorado AAA office (see page 8 for office locations). You can also find a complete listing of AAA's Show Your Card & Save partners online.

AAA not opposed to mass transit

We were distressed when reading the "Car Guys" column in the Denver Post to learn that a part of our AAA Colorado dues was being used to lobby against mass transit. It is difficult to fathom that AAA can think that roadways alone can accommodate the burgeoning number of cars that use our inadequate road system.
Virginia and Chuck Carscallen, Lakewood, via email

Editor's Note: The following is an excerpt from a response by Mary Greer, AAA Colorado's director of public relations: Unfortunately, there is a lot of misinformation regarding AAA's lobbying activities on behalf of all travelers. The amount of money spent is minimal and is carefully studied before AAA moves forward. For example, last year we lobbied to improve the child passenger safety restraint law in Colorado. We were successful in getting additional language added to the law to include booster seats for children 4-6 years of age and up to 55 inches in height.

Our position is that we support efforts to ensure a safe transportation system that matches the diverse needs of U.S. communities. Whether it is repairing current roadways, building light rail, expanding bus transportation or developing car pooling programs, AAA has worked with various federal, state and local community organizations to find solutions that work no matter what mode of transportation.

While the majority of travelers opt to use their vehicle as the main source of transportation, we do not take the position that automobiles are the only choice available to travelers. We do, however, support efforts to ensure that the current transportation system remains safe for all users.

Please review page 32 of the July/August issue of EnCompass, which describes how AAA works toward maintaining a healthy environment by encouraging "consumers to use alternative vehicles that include mass transit." More about our advocacy efforts can be found online at www.aaapublicaffairs.com.

Membership provides $65 on-the-spot savings

During the July 4th weekend we wanted to stay at the Sky Hotel in Aspen. Needless to say, it is a very pricey hotel. With my AAA membership, I was able to save $65 off the price of the room. Thanks, AAA!

New York City specials available through AAA Travel

I saw the article on New York City in the July/August issue and was wondering what AAA has to offer as far as coupons and specials for the city?
Debbie Downing, via email

Editor's Note: At the end of the NYC article, a "AAA Connection" box mentioned AAA accommodation and Broadway show packages. Further information is available from your AAA Travel professional or at www.aaa.com.

Your Opinion Counts

Following is a representative reply to last issue's question: Is Colorado best experienced in the summer or winter?
  • Summer travel through Colorado's high country is fragrant, full of wildlife and the roads are, for the most part, stress-free and you can travel off the beaten paths in the high country-that is the real experience of Colorado. Jan Dyck, Gypsum

This month: To commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Wright brothers' flight at Kitty Hawk, we would like to include in the November/ December issue of EnCompass a selection of aviation reminiscences from you, our readers, that captures the joy, the thrill, the primeval awe that's at the heart of humans soaring among the clouds.

Please send us 50 words describing a special aviation memory. It doesn't matter how recent the memory. It could be your feelings during your first airplane flight, taken last month. It could be a memory of your parents taking you to Stapleton airport to see planes take off and land. It could be the childhood image of an open-cockpit barnstorming plane landing in a field during the early days of aviation.
