A Yank in the Queen's Court
Behind-the-scenes
at two of London's
famous palaces
by Janna Graber
Kensington
Although Kensington is a royal residence, the State Apartments and Royal Ceremonial Dress Collection are open to the public. The collection includes dresses worn by Princess Diana, who made Kensington home even after her divorce.
Drawing thousands of visitors a year, Kensington has the feel of a country estate, especially in Queen Anne's Orangery. Built to house fruit trees during the winter, the Orangery is now a teahouse open to the public. Sunlight streams through a wall of windows, filling the rooms and creating a magical location for taking tea and scones.
