"Teaching Your Teens to Drive"
AAA Program can help parents and teens
learn together
AAA Colorado is supporting two bills in the Colorado legislature that aim to improve the safety of teenage drivers.
Parental efforts are just as important and AAA has put together a package of lesson materials titled Teaching Your Teens to Drive, that helps parents work with their teenage drivers during the driver education process.
These materials characterize AAA's approach to driver training—introduce the responsibility of driving to teens in graduated stages through a proven training curriculum based on the most common causes of teen-driver crashes.
Teaching Your Teens to Drive contains a colorfully illustrated handbook, detailed teacher guide,
live-action video and interactive CD-ROM. Thirteen lessons focus on developing the following skills:
- Basic vehicle control
- Positioning and speed adjustment
- Passing and off-road maneuvers
- Visual search habits
- Freeway and night
driving
- Driving on slippery
surfaces
- Reducing risks
Before taking to the road, parents and teens
are encouraged to watch together each of the 13
lessons contained in the 50-minute program. Then, during in-car driving
lessons, follow the step-by-step approaches contained in each section.
While the Teaching Your Teens To Drive package is available to the general public, it is offered to AAA members at a discount. For more information or to order a copy, call 303-753-8800, ext. 2323.

Did You Know?
Book Disneyland through
AAA Travel and get added benefit
A few years ago, Disney decided to tackle the difficult problem of long lines at popular attractions. The company's solution was the Fastpass, which has revolutionized the way people stand
in lines.
How does it work?
Disney's Fastpass is a free service that basically saves your spot in line at the most popular park attractions so that you can enjoy other activities instead of standing in line. When you visit a Fastpass attraction at Disneyland, insert your Park Hopper ticket into the Fastpass machine. The Fastpass ticket that comes out will show a specific window of time; simply return to the attraction during that time and you can board the attraction with a minimal wait.
What's the AAA member added benefit?
Normally, tickets for additional Fastpass attractions can only be pulled when the first Fastpass ticket has been used or has expired. However, when you book your Disney vacation through AAA Travel, and the package includes a stay at one of the Disney hotels, you'll receive the unique benefit of collecting Fastpass tickets for multiple attractions at one time.
For more information on Fastpass and exclusive AAA/Disney vacation packages, visit your local AAA Travel professional, call 303-753-8800.
Take a look, see the difference
AAA Colorado has recently revamped its website to better serve
member needs. Improvements include a new look, easier navigation
and more content. Take a peek at www.aaa.com.
Mobile battery service
continues to expand
In spring of 2003, AAA Colorado expanded its mobile battery service from Denver proper to the entire Denver Metro area. By the autumn of 2003, AAA had once again expanded the mobile battery service—this time to Colorado Springs.
AAA's battery service meets the needs of today's busy individuals by providing mobile battery testing, battery boosting and replacement service. Overall, the service:
- Eliminates the hassles and inconveniences that can occur with battery-related breakdowns
- Is fast and convenient
- Provides battery delivery and installation at home, work or other convenient location of your choice
- Provides a freshness guarantee on the batteries, as well as a competitive, nationwide warranty
- Gives peace-of-mind roadside service
So, the next time you think you might need a battery and you're in Colorado Springs or the Denver Metro area, call AAA Colorado (1-800-AAA-HELP). Ask for the battery van to come out and give you a complimentary battery test and get you and your automobile back on the road.
For carefree vacations
For many of us, the care-free days of backpacking around Europe are long gone. We're older and-we hope-a lot wiser. While still not losing our adventurous sides, we've now exchanged carefree for
careful, especially when it comes to traveling with our spouses and children.
AAA Travel realizes this and has teamed up with AccessAmerica to offer
AAA TripAssist, a comprehensive travel insurance
for home and aboard,
cruises and tours.
Depending on the level of coverage chosen (and with some restrictions), TripAssist can
provide:
- Trip cancellation and interruption protection
- Emergency medical and dental benefits, including, in
some cases, the valuable services of a translator
- Baggage coverage
- Travel delay coverage
- Missed cruise connection coverage
- Travel accident coverage
Admittedly, thinking about how things might go wrong on a vacation isn't a lot of fun, but you may find that careful planning may lead to a carefree vacation.
For more information about TripAssist, visit your local AAA office or call your AAA Travel professional.
"Plus" Membership dues rise slightly
Due to various operating cost increases, AAA Colorado has raised its Plus Primary and Plus Associate dues by $1 per member, and Plus RV by $2 per household, effective Jan. 1, 2004. Dues increases will be reflected in 2004 renewal notices.
Basic Primary and Basic Associate dues remain the same.
AAA membership remains an affordable value that can easily earn back the amount of dues within a year through member savings in automotive services, the Show Your Card & Save program, AAA Travel package values and insurance premiums from the best-rated companies through AAA Insurance.
Tips on cell phone use and driving
Cellular telephones are everywhere. In an emergency, they can be a lifesaver. However, they can also be distracting-especially when driving. If using the phone is essential while driving, consider the following tips to help you do so in a safe and reasonable manner:
- Recognize that driving requires your full attention
- Before you get behind the wheel, familiarize yourself with the features of your cell phone
- Use your cell phone only if it is absolutely necessary
- If you must use your phone, do so at a safe time and place
- Ask a passenger in the car to place the call for you and, if possible, speak in your place
- Plan your conversation in advance and keep it short
- Hang up the phone as soon as possible, especially in heavy traffic and hazardous weather conditions
- Secure your phone in the car so that it does not become a projectile in
a crash
This information is excerpted from the brochure Drive Safer, Talk Later: The AAA Guide to Cell Phones and Driving. If you would like a copy, call 303-753-8800,
ext. 8295 or visit your local AAA office.
College Scholarships
AAA Travel Challenge
more than geography contest
The second annual AAA Travel Challenge kicks off January 12 and once again offers $156,000 in college scholarships. The contest's title is not truly indicative
of the knowledge needed
to compete.
"The AAA Travel Challenge is more than just a geography contest—it tests students'
travel literacy by focusing on travel and tourism destinations," says Sandra Hughes, AAA Travel vice president.
The inaugural contest drew approximately 8,000 high school-age participants in 2003.
The 2004 competition is open to high school students grades 9-12 and begins with a 40-question online quiz available from Jan. 12-21 at www.aaa.com/travelchallenge. The top five scorers on the online quiz in each state will take a proctored, written exam in early March. The top scorer on the written exam in each state wins a $1,000 scholarship and an all expense-paid trip for two (student and chaperone) to compete for
one of three first-place $25,000 scholarships in
the national finals, which will be held April 24-27 at Universal Orlando.
Scholarship prizes are provided by the Hogan Family Foundation, a Newbury Park, Calif., non-profit organization that promotes a greater understanding of the importance of travel and tourism
Corporate sponsors for the contest are Continental Airlines, Holland America Line, Marriott, MBNA America, Pleasant Holidays and Universal Orlando.

10 tips
to guard
against
identity
theft
Two years ago, EnCompass ran these important
10 tips. Because identity theft is still a major issue, they are worth a second mention:
1. Protect your Social Security number. Unless you have a specific need for it, don't carry your Social Security card or your medical insurance card, which commonly lists your Social Security number. If asked for your Social Security number, question why it is needed and inquire if another form of identification is acceptable. Do not give it out to any person or company unless you are familiar with them and have initiated communication with them.
2. Order a copy
of your credit report each year and check for accuracy.
3. Guard against mail theft. Putting outgoing mail in post office collection boxes and promptly remove incoming mail from your mailbox.
4. Pay attention to billing cycles. Follow up with creditors if bills don't arrive on time.
5. Shred or tear charge receipts, credit applications, insurance forms, bank checks/statements, expired charge cards,
etc., before throwing them away.
6. Never provide personal information over the phone, through the mail or over the Internet unless you have initiated contact or know with whom you are dealing.
7. Minimize the amount of identification and the number of credit cards you carry.
8. Find out who has access to your personal information at work. Verify that it is kept in a
secure location.
9. For credit card(s), bank and phone account PINs or passwords, do not use obvious information such as birthday, address, Social Security number, phone number, etc.
10. Notify credit bureaus immediately if you detect errors on your credit report.
