Colorado Explorer
New state section
Although EnCompass has always covered Colorado —through the Mini Tour, full-length features and departments such as News to Use, My Colorado and Colorado Calendar-we felt it was time to do more. In this new section, Colorado Explorer, we will seek out and highlight what makes our state so different and unique-everything from its fascinating history, boutique shopping and creative dining, to its specialty events, local lodging and one-of-a-kind attractions. We hope you like Colorado Explorer.
Glenwood Springs chosen
as one of America's Dozen
Distinctive Destinations
This spring, the National Trust for Historic Preservation released its fifth annual Dozen Distinctive Destinations list, which offers alternative vacation destinations that are dedicated to historic preservation and celebrating their unique heritage.
Glenwood Springs was the only Colorado city this year to make the prestigious list. In announcing Glenwood Springs, the Trust stated:
"Nestled in a beautiful
valley on the western slope of the Colorado Rockies, Glenwood Springs (pop. 7,700) was developed
as a health resort in the
late 1800s. Today, the
town offers travelers limitless opportunities for
adventure, sightseeing
and relaxation in a richly historic setting...
"The variety of dining and shopping opportunities on and around Main Street will keep parents busy, while kids will get a kick out of visits to a historic ghost town, the Glenwood Railroad Museum, the Frontier Historical Museum, or the grave of the town's best-known resident,
cardshark and gunfighter, Doc Holliday…
"In the warmer months, visitors have their choice of hiking, rafting, biking and fishing in scenic Glenwood Canyon and other nearby natural areas…and the reward for all this activity is the chance to chill out
(or warm up) with a
relaxing dip in the world's largest outdoor hot-springs pool."
