See & Do
Rattlesnakes and tall tales
We've been digging around the state for unique and interesting things for you to see and do this summer. Here's a few nuggets.
Well-known
and worth it
More than 300 million years in the making, the golf course at Arrowhead Golf Club in Littleton is surely one of the most photographed in the world. Robert Trent Jones II, the designer, said it best: "The cathedral-like conglomerate rocks jutting up from the rolling terrain at the foothills of the Rockies is a majestic setting." Beware: The scenery may distract you. 303-973-9614.
Conde Nast and Travel + Leisure agree that hotel spas don't get better than The Spa at the Broadmoor in Colorado Springs. Check out the spa's recent expansion and renovation and indulge in a variety of unique services, including its famous hydrotherapy treatment,
the Broadmoor Falls.
719-577-5770 or
800-634-7711.
Lesser-known gems
Mention arches and most Coloradans think of Utah, not knowing there's a gem called Rattlesnake Canyon near Colorado National Monument. Just west of Grand Junction, the
canyon is packed not with
rattlesnakes but with the second-highest concentration of arches in the world. The menacing name and remote location make this a great escape, but definitely research all aspects of this rugged spot before going. 970-244-3000.
Boating through a spectacular Colorado canyon doesn't have to involve white water and flimsy rubber rafts. From Memorial Day to Labor Day the Elk Creek Marina offers boat tours of the Black Canyon of the Gunnison. About 25 miles west of Gunnison, the canyon's narrow opening, startling depth and the sheer walls make for an awe-inspiring site, especially from ground level.

Something different
Like to swing? The fun place to be from June 17-20 may well be Fort Morgan, where they'll be celebrating the 100th anniversary of the birth of Glenn Miller, local high school graduate, aka the world's greatest big band leader. Great music and evening dances are the major draws of Glenn Miller's SwingFest, with additional activities planned for the entire weekend, including vintage planes and a 5K run. 800-354-8660 or 970-867-6702.
"If it ain't here, it don't exist," says Jerry Chubbick, owner of what must be Colorado's attic. At the Genoa Wonder View Tower and Museum, 95 miles southeast of Denver, a labyrinth of 22 rooms is cluttered with memorabilia-from Indian artifacts to antique western tools to... well, stuff. But there's a story behind every item and Jerry knows it (or he'll make one up). Open June through October. 719-763-2309.
