Don't forget the rattlesnakes
I enjoyed your article about the Pawnee grassland area in the September/October issue. I spent some time there in the 1960s and enjoyed the solitude you described. One inhabitant was omitted from your story—the rattlesnake…Thank you again for reminding me of the beauty of the area, with or without the snakes.

Colorado Explorer for travel ideas
My wife and I enjoy eating out at unique restaurants such as Sopris and Gabriels. We also like to stay at hotels such as the Strater and the Hotel Colorado. It would be something special if you could devote one page of the EnCompass to those kinds of restaurants on one side and to places to stay on the other side.

The AAA Fuel Price Finder & hybrid cars
I find the idea of AAA promoting a website that tracks gas prices to be environmentally, socially, politically and financially irresponsible. It merely gives drivers the idea that they can make things better by shopping around.
Sure, that might save a few pennies on the dollar but it keeps Americans driving gas guzzlers and makes no real, lasting impact.
What AAA needs to do is to launch a serious campaign to get all its members driving hybrids…such a campaign would make a huge difference, not just in your members' wallets (over the life of the car), but also in the environmental and political impact of our driving habits.

Editor's Note: This is one of numerous letters that came in response to our request for member ideas in the September/ October EnCompass. Thanks to all those who did respond. AAA Colorado feels that the Fuel Price Finder (www.aaa.com/fuelgauge) referred to above, is a practical tool for AAA members seeking the lowest gas prices in their area, whether they drive a gas guzzler or a fuel-efficient car. AAA's position on gas prices—raising fuel economy standards, updating mpg testing procedures, and better federal standards for clean gasoline—is outlined in the President's Message on page 6. AAA Colorado considers its role to be that of an educational/informational resource and national advocate when appropriate.
Gasoline is not a gas
I just read with interest and frustration the September/October article, “Where your gas dollar goes.” Gas is not refined from crude oil into an automobile fuel: gasoline is! They are two totally different substances and are not interchangeable.

Editor's Note: You are correct in the scientific definition. However, language is an ever-changing entity and common use deems the two words interchangeable in this context. We are sorry the use of “gas” frustrates you, but, to be honest, you'll probably see it again.
