In the last issue of EnCompass, I asked members to send me their thoughts about what AAA's reporting and educational efforts should focus on, especially as they relate to the escalating price of gasoline. Since then, hurricanes Katrina and Rita have had their devastating impact—not only on the lives of those within their paths, but also on the economy, especially the U.S. oil and gasoline infrastructure.
For those members who took the time to respond to my request, thank you. Ideas and suggestions included everything from launching “a serious campaign to get all members driving hybrids,” to lobbying Congress for stronger energy policies that would greatly reduce the severity of supply disruptions, which result in major price spikes around the United States.
The consensus—and our belief—is that AAA Colorado should be a major educational resource for information and practical consumer tips. We have compiled a wealth of resources and materials, including such items as a Fuel Price Finder, a Fuel Gauge Calculator and a 12-page brochure on fuel economy tips (visit www.aaa.com and click on News & Safety). Additionally, we have an article in this issue about hybrid cars.
On a national level, AAA shares its knowledge and expertise with Congress. As North America 's largest motoring and leisure travel organization, with more than 48 million members, AAA has built a reputation as a leader and advocate for the safety and security of all travelers.
As part of that effort, AAA's national president, Robert L. Darbelnet, recently testified before the U.S. Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee. He asked Congress to commit to achieving higher fuel economy standards on all vehicles, updating miles per gallon (mpg) testing procedures and establishing a federal standard for clean gasoline.
Regarding the need to improve fuel economy standards, Darbelnet said, “if automakers are unwilling to accept this challenge voluntarily, Congress should require improvements.” He called on the Environmental Protection Agency to modify its mpg testing procedures to accurately reflect real-world driving conditions. Policymakers should also pursue a uniform standard for clean gasoline to eliminate the current patchwork of multiple fuel blend requirements throughout the nation.
AAA Colorado will continue to do its part to provide members with a wide variety of information, educational resources and practical tips for consumers. We will also actively lobby our leaders in government and industry for long-term solutions that work.
Together, we can make a difference.
