Inaccurate caption
The cover picture on the July/August issue was beautiful, but the caption (appearing on page 3) is incorrect. This view is overlooking the town of Mount Crested Butte, not the town of Crested Butte.

Better road markings for safety
I have never seen any reference in
EnCompass to night driving and the poor road marking that is characteristic of large portions of the Denver metro area. Snow plows understandably wreak havoc on the road surfaces, thereby precluding the use of "cat's eyes" to mark lanes and road margins.
Lane markers are not repainted with the frequency that ensures continued safety. The idea of painting curbs at corners and the ends of center medians has not been applied, for some reason.
Having driven in many parts of this planet, I am appalled that the local driving public has tolerated conditions that are worse than in some third-world countries, unless everybody has owl-like night vision and unblemished windshields, which I doubt.

Lure of the Plains
I was interested in your article "The Lure of the Plains" [July/August, page 26-27.] Your article on Dearfield Ghost Town was of special interest to me. From 1971 to 1992 I was a state trooper stationed in Greeley. Dearfield is at the county line or close to it, and whenever we had relays to send to the State Patrol office out east, we would always meet at that store. Got to know the owner real well, who was in his 70s way back then.
Thanks for those kind of articles. We have been AAA members for over 30 years.
-F. A. Holmes, Greeley
Just want to take this opportunity to thank Shelly Steig for her article in "The Lure of the Plains." We took time to visit Vogel Canyon just last week and enjoyed the hiking trails, the covered picnic tables and the scenery in general. The trails were well marked and the entire area was well-maintained. We would not have known about this place, had it not been for her article. It was a bit of a drive for us, but well worth the effort!

Not offended by Da Vinci tour
In regards to the reader who was offended by the inclusion of information on Da Vinci Code-related tours [July/August, page 9], I have this to say: I am a Christian, and "The Da Vinci Code" does not threaten or upset me one bit. In fact I am in the process of reading the book right now. Apparently, some of us are more secure in our faith than others.

No more laws needed
We do not need more laws. We need enforcement of existing traffic regulations.
Let's just look at one area, namely the correct state requirement that we need a driver's license. I agree, but the best guess I've heard from friends in law enforcement is that 20% of all drivers drive without a valid license.
Then there is insurance. Mine just went up because of uninsured motorists. The same police officers tell me 25% of drivers do not have valid insurance.
Let's get these people off the road, because I'm sure this would do more to improve safety and lower costs than having police officers ticket
people without belts. Strict enforcement works.
