Mystery Destination
Where in the world?

Can you guess where this photo was taken?

No prizes, just a chance to discover a new corner of our world.

Mystery Destination

This issue's Mystery Destination photo is Kinkaku-ji, the Golden Pavilion in Kyoto, Japan. The Golden Pavilion is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most popular attractions in Kyoto, a city renowned for its large number of beautiful and historic gardens and temples.

Kinkaku-ji was built in 1397 as the retirement home of the shogun (military ruler) Ashikaga Yoshimitsu. His son later converted it into a Buddhist temple. The name of the Golden Pavilion is not metaphorical: its entire exterior is covered in real gold leaf.

In 1950, tragedy struck here when a mentally disturbed monk set fire to the building, destroying it. The project to rebuild the Golden Pavilion completely to the original design took almost fifty years, beginning in 1955 and ending in 2003 with the completion of the roof.

Your AAA Travel professional can assist you with planning a trip to Kyoto or any other international or domestic destination.
