Gasoline prices reach highest point in a year
Prices approaching Hurricane Katrina levels

Denver, July 12- Rising global tension has pushed gasoline prices in Colorado and the rest of the nation to their highest level of the year, and near their all-time high reached in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina last September.

Colorado's average price of regular unleaded gasoline today is $2.956, according to AAA's daily, on-line Fuel Gauge Report (www.aaa.com/fuelgauge). The national average reached its highest price of $2.968 per gallon on Tuesday. On September 5 of last year — Labor Day Monday — prices hit an all-time record national high of $3.057 per gallon and in Colorado the previous record high was $3.074 on September 7, 2005.

AAA said events in Mexico, Iran, Iraq, Israel, India and North Korea have energy markets on edge and oil prices at elevated levels. The motor club urged motorists to do what they can to conserve fuel during their day-to-day activities, and to listen closely to what congressional candidates are saying about global security and cooperation, and their plans for America's energy future. Congress is looking at putting caps on the trading of crude oil, among other things.

The average price of regular unleaded in Colorado was $2.84 one month ago. One year ago the price was $2.29 per gallon, AAA Colorado said.

Denver's average price today is $2.90, the highest its been since last September 9, when it hit $3.02 per gallon for regular unleaded. And Vail is recording the highest price in the mountains, at $3.22 per gallon. Vail's record high was set last September 7 at $3.28.

You can find specific prices of gasoline in various cities and towns throughout Colorado and the country by clicking on our Fuel Price Finder, listed under Resources at www.aaa.com/fuelgauge.

According to AAA, Hawaii has the highest average gas price in the nation at $3.37 per gallon. California and Connecticut have the next highest average prices at $3.26 per gallon and $3.19 per gallon; respectively. In total, sixteen states and the District of Columbia have average retail prices in excess of $3 per gallon at this time.

South Carolina and Tennessee have the lowest statewide average gasoline prices in the nation at $2.79 and $2.75 per gallon; respectively.

Other fuel economy tips from AAA Colorado:
  • Use the lowest grade of gas your car can take. Unless your vehicle owner's manual calls for premium gas, there's no reason to use it.
  • Slow down. For every mile you drive above 55 mph, your fuel economy drops by 2 percent. And gas mileage tends to drop quickly at speeds above 60 mph. The EPA offers this rule of thumb: Assume that for every 5 mph you drive over 60 mph, you might as well be paying an additional $0.20 per gallon for gas.
  • Drive in the highest gear you can, at the lowest possible speed. The slower your engine turns, the less gas you use.
  • Don't accelerate when driving uphill -- it makes your mileage per gallon plummet. Instead, try to drive at the same speed, or even a little slower.
  • Try to brake less by anticipating stops. When you brake, you waste the acceleration you've already used. Instead, try to accelerate slowly when leaving a stoplight, and then coast to the next light.
  • Ditch your car's luggage rack, roof rack and related outdoorsy gear and put it away until you actually need to use it. The drag created from this gear can reduce your mileage per gallon by up to 5 percent.
  • Get rid of the junk in your trunk. Every 100 pounds in the trunk can reduce your fuel economy by 1 to 2 percent.

AAA's Fuel Gauge Report is based on data from Oil Price Information Service (OPIS), the nation's most comprehensive source of petroleum pricing information. AAA purchases the data and makes it available free on the Internet at www.fuelgaugereport.com as a public service. Average daily prices for the nation, all 50 states and more than 250 localities are available for all grades of gasoline, making the site the most current and complete public source of fuel price information.

Note to Colorado Media: For daily OPIS updates, visit www.aaa.com/fuelgauge or www.fuelgaugereport.com. Data is usually 24-48 hours old and is based on credit card transactions taken from 60,000 gas stations nationwide. To calculate fuel costs for a road trip, go to www.fuelcostcalculator.com.
