Spring break’s top destinations and travel tips

DENVER, March 13 — The upcoming arrival of spring has never been more welcome in Colorado.

Following a winter that featured several historically large snowstorms, and snow on the ground in Denver for a near all-time-record of 61 consecutive days, more Coloradans are eager to take a spring break vacation. According to travel bookings through AAA Colorado, between March 26 and March 30, spring break travel will be as busy as ever.

Where are Coloradans traveling?

It should be no surprise that those heading out of state are looking for warmer climates.

The top out-of-state destinations this year are Santa Ana, Calif. (Disneyland), followed by Orlando, Las Vegas and Cancun, Mexico.

For those staying closer to home, the most in-state hotel bookings through AAA Colorado are for Denver followed by Durango,Grand Junction and Vail.

If you have not already booked a spring break getaway, finding exactly what you want could be difficult. However, according to AAA Colorado’s director of travel Sandra Barnes, it’s much easier if you have someone to provide assistance. “There are several advantages to having a travel agent do the work for you when making travel plans. A travel agent has access to information that may not be available to those trying to do it themselves, as well as access to special packages. Not to mention, having a travel professional in your corner to rely on for assistance is invaluable should you encounter problems along the way.”

For travelers taking a trip out of state during spring break, stay in communication with friends and family back at home. “It’s always wise to have a calling card, or know the location of an Internet café at your travel destination,” said Barnes. “This is even more important if you’re traveling outside the United States. One way to insure an enjoyable vacation is to stay flexible and always be prepared for the unexpected.”

Other advice for spring break travelers:
  • Leave a copy of your ID and any other formal documentation at home in case it is lost or stolen.

  • Remember “3-1-1” at the airport for liquid or gel carry-ons: Use only 3 oz. or smaller bottles, place them in a 1-quart clear plastic bag. Visit www.tsa.gov for updates on security procedures and carry-on restrictions.

  • Air passengers can carry-on larger amounts of necessary liquids such as prescription medications, or formula and milk when traveling with a baby. These are not required to be in the zip-top bag. If in doubt, put liquids in checked luggage.

  • Arrive at the airport early. Heavy travel volumes and more security may mean longer lines at security checkpoints.

  • If traveling by car, get a tune up before the trip. Check tire pressure and fluids. Keep an emergency kit in the car with such items as a flashlight, extra batteries, water, kitty litter for traction, blankets, warm clothes and any other items you feel would be necessary in the event of a worst case scenario of being stranded in your vehicle for an extended period of time.

  • Consider travel insurance to provide coverage in the event of an unexpected illness or interruption to your trip.
