AAA Colorado urges calm in wake of UK terrorist plot
Be prepared with information before traveling

Denver, Aug 10-With America under a Severe Threat Advisory from the Department of Homeland Security in response to a serious terrorist threat to international air travel, AAA Colorado encourages travelers not to make quick decisions about changing travel plans until they have considered changes in travel restrictions and the latest travel warnings from the U.S. government.

People who will be traveling in the next few days will need to find out all the information they can, making travel agents extremely valuable. Agents can help travelers not only find the most current information but also accommodate scheduling changes if desired.

"So far, we've received no requests to change anyone's travel plans," said Sandra Barnes, director of travel services for AAA Colorado. "While the terrorist threat remains real, the fact that so many individuals were arrested before this plot could be carried out has probably boosted some travelers' confidence."

As one of the nation's leading leisure travel agencies, AAA encourages travelers to follow the heightened protective measures released by the Department of Homeland Security to ensure safety and security during domestic and international travel:

  • No liquids or gels of any kind permitted in carry-on baggage. Items must be in checked bags, including shampoo, suntan lotion, creams, toothpaste, hair gel, and items of similar consistency.
  • EXCEPTION: Baby formula, breast milk or juice if a baby or small child is traveling; prescription medicine or essential non-prescription medicine like insulin.
  • No beverages to be brought on board aircraft — including water.

    Other tips to help travelers:

  • On traveler's day of departure, check departing airport's website for any reported new security delays. For DIA, log on to www.flydenver.com.
  • Arrive extra early (2-3 hours) to accommodate for longer security lines.
  • Pack without clutter to facilitate easier screening.
  • Be prepared for TSA personnel to check carry-on baggage at the gate.
  • Comply with all requests from security personnel and do not joke about bombs or other threats.

For added security, the Federal Air Marshals Service will provide expanded coverage for flights from the United Kingdom to the United States. Customs and Border Protection will increase enforcement efforts in international arrival areas including the use of advanced targeting tools, special response teams including baggage and aircraft search teams, baggage x-ray equipment, specially trained canine units and explosive detection technology. Also, passengers traveling from the United Kingdom to the United States will be subject to a more extensive screening process. All flights from the United Kingdom must transmit passenger manifest information for intensive screening prior to departure from the gate. Passengers on all international flights will be subject to heightened inspection upon arrival in the United States.

These added security enhancements should give travelers peace of mind as they continue with business as usual. For additional information, contact the U.S. State Department's website for travel warnings: www.travel.state.gov. For more details on the travel restrictions, contact the Department of Homeland Security's website at www.tsa.gov.

AAA Colorado reaches one in four households in the state and is an advocate for safety and security for all travelers. As North America’s largest motoring and leisure travel organization, AAA provides its nearly 49 million members with travel, insurance, financial and automotive-related services, as well as member-exclusive savings.
