Each year, 60 full-time AAA/CAA Tourism Editors visit over 50,000 lodgings, campgrounds, restaurants and attractions throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean. Tourism Editors conduct unannounced inspections of lodgings and restaurants, scrutinizing such areas as cleanliness, safety, ambiance, amenities and service. AAA began field inspections of lodgings and restaurants in 1937. AAA adopted a formal rating system for TourBook guide accommodations that evolved into the current one to five level diamond rating system in 1977 in celebration of AAA's 75th anniversary. Evaluations and diamond ratings of restaurants began in 1986.
