Pointers 'n Patches for Picking Pumpkins and Cornfusing Mazes!

There's a fat jack 'o lantern in a Colorado patch just ripe for plucking by your family or friends. And, while you're pumpkin browsing, hone your directional instincts in a Colorado corn maze.

Following are over 30 selections of pumpkin and corn-related attractions throughout the state. But you'd be remiss to stop with only these selections — research other facilities in counties around Colorado.

To insure you select and preserve your prize pumpkin, we offer these ideas. Happy Halloween Hunting!

Tips for selecting, cleaning storing and preserving your pumpkin

Inspect every pumpkin from all sides and angles. Look for a bright orange color everywhere and that there are no scars, bruises, mold or soft spots.

Lighter pumpkins are easier to carve, but do not last as long as darker ones.

While on the vine prior to cutting, set the pumpkin upright as you would have it sitting when carved to insure it will sit level.

Use pruning shears when cutting your own pumpkin from the vine. Leave about 3 inches of stem as a pumpkin will dry out quickly if the stem is broken or closer to the fruit.

Carry the pumpkin holding it from the bottom — not the stem.

Store the pumpkin in a cool, dry place until ready to display or carve. Wash or sponge with water and allow to dry.

An ice-cream scoop is an ideal tool for cleaning out the insides or 'brains' of the pumpkin.

Some propose coating the entire pumpkin — inside and out — with petroleum jelly after cutting to seal in moisture.

Soaking a shriveled pumpkin in cold water overnight often restores it to pristine condition.
