With You Every Step of
the Way
Children's safety has been one of the cornerstones of AAA since the
federation was first formed in the 1920s. We have been on the forefront of safety education, informing parents and children about safety as passengers, pedestrians and drivers. Whether it be child passenger safety seats (see our Commentary) or vehicle crash worthiness (the topic of this month's AutoTalk), AAA works tirelessly to inform members and the general public about safety. This is especially critical as new trends occur-since it can mean reducing the severity of children's injuries, or literally saving lives.A case in point is the skyrocketing sales of a new unpowered scooter that was not on the market a year ago. At press time, the Directorate for Economic Analysis, a division of the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), predicted scooter sales in 2000 would reach two to five million units-an increase from virtually zero in 1999. Between May and August 2000 there were over 4,000 emergency-room-treated injuries associated with scooters. Of these, 90 percent were children less than 15 years of age. And about 31 percent were children under eight years of age. The use of safety equipment, such as helmets, kneepads, wrist guards and elbow pads could have prevented or reduced the severity of the approximately 9,400 scooter related injuries (through August 2000) by about 63 percent. AAA strives to help parents keep their children safe-from infants first being placed in a safety seat, to children learning to cross streets safely, to young adults learning how to drive-we are with you every step of the way. © Rocky Mountain Motorists, Inc. |
