National 3D Prevention Month

Are you a responsible drinker? Unfortunately, not everyone is. According to the Colorado Department of Transportation, approximately 36,676 drivers were arrested in 1999 (latest available data) for driving under the influence of alcohol or narcotics. In 2000, 209 people died in alcohol-related vehicle crashes in Colorado. What does this mean to you? Consider the following:

  • One alcohol-related fatality occurs every 33 minutes.
  • In 1999, 15,786 people died as a result of alcohol-related crashes.

December is National Drunk and Drugged Driving (3D) Month. Be a part of the solution to this problem, and make your community safer by working to prevent drunken and drugged driving. The following suggestions can help you protect yourself and your family:

  • Never allow yourself or your loved ones to ride in a car with someone who is intoxicated. Find another way to get where you need to be-or don't go. Consider all transportation alternatives, such as taking a cab, which might be free in this situation.
  • When entertaining, be a responsible host. Encourage sensible drinking by serving nonalcoholic drinks, and never give alcohol to someone under the age of 21.
  • Call to report impaired drivers to law enforcement. Cell phone users may dial *CSP for a direct, toll-free connection to the Colorado State Patrol. Visible signs of impairment may be weaving, driving too slowly, making very wide turns, stopping when inappropriate, and excessive speeding or lane changing. Provide the license plate number, description of the vehicle and the direction in which the car was traveling.
  • Use the designated driver system when you have a night out. Encourage your friends and loved ones to do the same.
  • Protect yourself against other drivers. Wear your safety belt, and make certain that children are properly secured in child safety seats.

On December 7-9, participating local law enforcement agencies statewide will conduct a special campaign, called "Office Party Weekend" to eradicate drunk and drugged driving. Last year, 330 DUI arrests occurred in the three-day span. It is also a time to remember to designate sober drivers, to serve non-alcoholic beverages when hosting parties, and get a cab for those guests who shouldn't be driving.
