"Great Battery Roundup" Set for Next Week
Indianapolis, IN (Apr. 14, 2008)
–
In commemoration of Earth Day (Apr. 22), AAA Hoosier Motor
Club is asking for public assistance in hunting down what is
estimated to be more than 5 million used, lead-acid car,
truck, boat, and motorcycle batteries nationwide that have
not yet made their way back to their natural habitat; the
recycling plant.
The car battery, a renewable source of vehicle power,
contains lead that is 97 percent recyclable.
“Some of these old batteries are being illegally disposed of
in dumpsters, or are simply placed in garages, yards or
storage sheds and forgotten about,” said Greg Seiter, public
affairs manager for AAA Hoosier Motor Club. “We want to
encourage people to take that extra step in helping get
these batteries to a recycling center.”
To assist in this process,
AAA Hoosier Motor Club will use its fleet trucks next week
(Apr. 21-26) during this year’s Great Battery Roundup to
remove used automobile and marine lead-acid batteries from
the environment.
The battery collection service will be available to those
living in the designated collection area—Indianapolis
(all of Marion County), Carmel, Fishers, Noblesville,
Zionsville, Brownsburg, Avon, Plainfield and Greenwood.
Anyone interested in requesting a pick-up should call the
club at 317-923-1222 and provide their name, address and the
location of the battery.
Callers do not need to be home when the pick-up is made but
club drivers must know ahead of time where to find the
battery targeted for collection. In addition, batteries must
already be disconnected and removed from automobiles and
boats in order to qualify for pick-up.
Aggressive animals located near batteries must be
restrained.
When handling batteries, AAA Hoosier Motor Club recommends
that:
-
consumers wear gloves and safety glasses
-
batteries be kept upright and placed in a sturdy box or
plastic container
-
a leak-proof container be used if a battery case is
cracked or leaking
-
smoking be completely avoided near batteries
-
batteries not be exposed to an open flame
-
batteries be secured in a way that will prevent them
from tipping
Batteries SHOULD NOT be dropped off at AAA Hoosier Motor
Club service centers.
