Club Working with Marion County Traffic Safety Partnership to Reduce Accidents at "High Crash" Intersections

Indianapolis, IN (Apr. 3, 2008) – AAA Hoosier Motor Club is working in conjunction with the Marion County Traffic Safety Partnership in an effort to reduce accidents and injuries at “high crash” intersections around the city of Indianapolis.

From now through mid-June, Marion County law enforcement officers, including those from the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, the Speedway Police Department, the Lawrence Police Department, the Beech Grove Police Department, the Cumberland Police Department and the Indiana State Police Department, will conduct special enforcement initiatives thanks to a grant provided by the Governor’s Council on Impaired and Dangerous Driving.

Officers will focus on a variety of moving violations in these specifically-targeted areas including speeding, following too closely, disregarding automatic signals and the failure to signal lane changes, in addition to other dangerous driving behaviors.

“Far too often, we see motorists on our roadways taking unnecessary chances and in the process, endangering themselves as well as others,” said Greg Seiter, public affairs manager for AAA Hoosier Motor Club. “Our goals are simple. We need to educate the public and at the same time, significantly reduce the number of accidents that are taking place.”

For example, according to the Marion County Traffic Safety Partnership, there were a total of 1,788 Marion County collisions throughout 2006 in which the primary contributing factor identified as probable cause was the disregarding of a signal or roadway regulatory sign.

“When people are in a hurry, safety is often times the last thing on their mind,” Seiter said. “But there’s absolutely no excuse for risk taking when you’re behind the wheel of an automobile and lives are at stake.”

The specific enforcement schedule is as follows:

·         Apr. 16, 2008 - 38th St. and High School Rd.

·         Apr. 22, 2008 - 38th St. and Lafayette Rd.

·         Apr. 30, 2008 - Stop 11 and U.S. 31 S.

·         May 6, 2008 - 86th St. and Michigan Rd.
