Marketplace Overview
The nationwide average price of self-serve regular gasoline
has finally dropped back below the $3-per-gallon mark. In
fact, at $2.998, today’s national average is the lowest seen
by Americans since May 3 when the price was $2.991 per
gallon.
It remains to be seen whether or not this downward trend
will continue, however.
Last week’s output, inventory and petroleum demand numbers
reported by the U.S. Department of Energy showed no increase
in gasoline stockpiles and a reduced rate of refinery output
from the previous week. Industry experts believe that a
variety of relatively minor operational setbacks at several
refineries in the last two weeks is partially to blame but
it will not be known if the industry is again slipping
behind demand for fuel until updated numbers are reported
today.
As always, the volatile nature of global politics and their
potential influence on oil prices continues to be a concern
relative to America’s gas pricing equation. In addition to
ongoing attacks on oil installations in Nigeria and a
possible five-day oil worker strike in Brazil set to begin
early next month, there remains fierce tension between
Israel and the Syrian-backed Hamas organization that took
over the Gaza Strip area of Israel last week.

Current gas price averages can always be found on AAA’s

from Oil Price Information Service, the nation’s most
comprehensive source of petroleum pricing information. AAA
purchases the data and makes it available free on the
Internet as a public service. Average daily prices for the
nation, all 50 states and more than 250 localities are
available for all grades of gasoline, making the site the
most current and complete public source of fuel price
information.
AAA’s Fuel Cost Calculator
In order to help Americans establish travel budgets while
making vacation plans, AAA and Oil Price Information Service
have combined to offer an online tool that will help
travelers estimate the cost of gasoline they will use during
long-distance driving vacations. The site can be found at:
www.fuelcostcalculator.com.
Indiana Gas Gouging Hotline
The Indiana attorney general established a gas gouging
hotline early in 2004 for people who feel that local gas
stations are charging unfair prices. That telephone number
is (866) 241-9753.
