Kokomo's Martin Honored with Child Safety Advocate Award

Indianapolis, IN (May 23, 2007) AAA Hoosier Motor Club’s Kokomo branch manager, Connie Martin, received one of six awards May 15 during the 11th Annual Child Safety Advocate Awards ceremony which took place in Indianapolis.

In recognition of the fact that every day, more than 39,000 children require medical treatment because of unintentional injuries, many of which are preventable, Safe Kids Indiana and the Automotive Safety Program, located at the Indiana University School of Medicine, traditionally recognize both groups and individuals who make significant strides in Indiana to prevent unintentional injuries from one year to the next.

Martin was designated an award recipient based on the rating she received in five categories: Leadership, Injury Prevention Activities, Community Involvement, Advocacy and Merit.

As one of AAA Hoosier Motor Club’s certified child passenger safety seat technicians, Martin coordinates a permanent fitting station at the club’s Kokomo office, where she, alone, inspected 249 car seats last year.

She also works with a local Wal-Mart in the Kokomo area at least four times each year to promote child passenger safety and she often speaks with new mothers about the subject at a nearby hospital—St Joseph Hospital.

Additionally, Martin works with Healthy Families to distribute child passenger safety seats and information to low-income families.

She has also convinced several local businesses that they need to be involved in child passenger safety. In fact, Kokomo Chrysler, Beck’s Hybrids, Conkle Pontiac, and Transmission Builders FCU have all sponsored car seat inspection events and paid for the replacement seats that were distributed at their respective events as a result of Martin’s influence.

“Connie lives and breathes child safety and her enthusiasm is contagious,” said Greg Seiter, public affairs manager for AAA Hoosier Motor Club. “She is very deserving of this award.”
