Pittsburgh, PA
December 1, 2008
1 Day
Highlights:
- Enjoy a day of visiting some of Pittsburgh’s beautiful
churches. The following is a tentative schedule for the day.
(Since churches are active houses of worship, featured
churches are subject to change due to religious
ceremonies.)
- Christmas Luncheon at The Priory
Itinerary:
Calvary Methodist Church – Calvary’s Tiffany windows, sculpted stone and carved oak capture the imagination of art critics and historians alike. The splendor of Louis Tiffany’s three magnificent windows located in the sanctuary should be the focal point of your tour.
St. Anthony’s Chapel - Located on Troy Hill on the North
Side this shrine is dedicated to “The Wonder Worker”, St. Anthony of Padua, houses a vast collection of relics and has
been designated as a Historical Landmark.
Christmas Luncheon – Grand Hall at the Priory
A delicious feast with all the trimmings awaits you with a
strolling violinist and vocal entertainment .
St. Stanislaus – Located in the Strip District and designed by
Pittsburgh architect Frederick Sauer. St. Stanislaus Kostka
Church was constructed in 1891. The congregation was
formed in 1873 when 200 Polish families banded together to
form the St. Stanislaus Kostka Beneficial Society.
St. Patrick’s – Located in the Strip District. "Old St.
Patrick's" was constructed in 1936, the fourth building for a
congregation established in 1811. Father Cox, St. Patrick's
priest in the 1930s, was a tireless activist for the
unemployed during the Depression. He had daily radio
sermons, opened a soup kitchen, ran a homeless shelter
and led a march on Washington to appeal for jobs. He
briefly ran for President as the Jobless Party candidate in
1932.
