As gas prices are rising, motorists and vacationers are concerned about how higher prices at the pump will impact their summer vacation. Although higher fuel costs are a concern when planning your summer vacation, do keep in mind that gas prices are only one part of your overall travel budget and there are things you can do to help minimize the costs. One of the easiest ways to match your fuel budget to your travel interests is to work with a qualified counselor. A good travel agent can help you select routes, destinations and transportation to maximize fuel savings. As you begin to make your summer travel plans, the first thing you need to do is establish a budget, or at least come up with a total dollar amount you are comfortable spending for your vacation. Evaluating the costs of flying versus the cost of driving can also be helpful when deciding on a destination. Your travel agent is the best source of infor- If you prefer drive trips, and many people do over the summer months, you may want to consider traveling closer to home by looking for more traveling opportunities within Pennsylvania or a nearby state. Choosing to take a more direct route, instead of a scenic route, will allow you to arrive at your destination quicker and save money in your fuel budget. Choose a car offering the best fuel economy. This could be one of your own vehicles or you may want to consider renting a more fuel-efficient model than one you currently own. Plan your routes so you can travel at constant speeds and bypass congested areas. It also helps to avoid routes with stop signs or traffic lights. To avoid extra weight, only take what you need and store your luggage inside the vehicle instead of strapping it to the roof where it will create wind resistance and lower your fuel economy. You can also choose a vacation spot where only minimal driving will be needed after you arrive. By following these suggestions, you can still plan a fun-filled, budget-friendly summer vacation amid the rising fuel costs.
