Tips From Your AAA Staff Quaint fishing villages, historic towns, a World Heritage Site, the Provincial Capital and mile after mile of breathtaking scenery all share this stretch of rugged Atlantic coastline. From Yarmouth to Halifax, the sights and sounds of the sea enthrall and inspire visitors in much the same way it has done for hundreds of years. The villages and towns dotted along the shore, a cultural mix of Scottish and French, hold on to traditions and a way of life that for some has not changed for generations.
Not sure whether you should drive the 700 miles to Nova Scotia or take The Cat Ferry? If your car averages 25 miles per gallon you will need 13 gallons to drive from Boston to the Calais, Maine/St. Stephen, New Brunswick border. At $4 a gallon that’s about $52. From there to Western Shore will require another 15 gallons, which at $5 a gallon (Canada is a little more expensive) is about $75, for a one way total of approximately $120-$130 if prices stay the same. By driving you can also take advantage of our great New Brunswick or Prince Edward Island Drive Vacations for a true Atlantic Maritimes holiday.
To save on driving time take the high speed CAT Ferry from either Portland or Bar Harbor Maine over to Yarmouth Nova Scotia. AAA can save you $50 on the round trip fare.
Or why not do a little “surf & turf” by driving one way and returning by boat or vice-versa? The one way fare aboard The Cat between Portland and Yarmouth for one car and 2 people is about $382.
