15 BC to AD 50 Romans establish frontier provinces along the Danube and found legionary fortress of Carnuntum. 500-700 After final withdrawal of Romans, Alamanni and Bavarian tribes settle lower Alpine regions. 966 Austmark, established as a bulwark against attacks from the east, is first referred to as Ostarrichi. 1278 Founding of Habsburg Dynasty, beginning 640 years of power. 1493-1519 Foundations of the Habsburg world empire laid by marriage contracts of Maximilian I. 1699 Conquest of Hungary; Habsburgs gain hereditary right to the Hungarian throne in the male line. 1805-1806 Napoleon defeats the Austrians at Battle of Austerlitz; end of Holy Roman Empire. 1814-15 Congress of Vienna restructures the political map of Europe. 1914 Assassination of heir to Austrian throne at Sarejevo leads to outbreak of World War I; Austria fights on losing side. 1919 Dissolution of Austro-Hungarian monarchy; loss of territories. 1938 Hitler incorporates Austria into the German Reich. 1939-45 World War II; Austrians fight in German army; following defeat, Austria is divided into four zones of occupation. 1955 Full sovereignty and founding of Second Republic; Austria is admitted to the United Nations. 1986 Kurt Waldheim is elected president. 1995 Austria joins European Community. 1999 Austria enters European Monetary Union. |
