15 BC to AD 50 Romans establish frontier provinces along the Danube and found legionary fortress of Carnuntum.

500-700 After final withdrawal of Romans, Alamanni and Bavarian tribes settle lower Alpine regions.

966 Austmark, established as a bulwark against attacks from the east, is first referred to as Ostarrichi.

1278 Founding of Habsburg Dynasty, beginning 640 years of power.

1493-1519 Foundations of the Habsburg world empire laid by marriage contracts of Maximilian I.

1699 Conquest of Hungary; Habsburgs gain hereditary right to the Hungarian throne in the male line.

1805-1806 Napoleon defeats the Austrians at Battle of Austerlitz; end of Holy Roman Empire.

1814-15 Congress of Vienna restructures the political map of Europe.

1914 Assassination of heir to Austrian throne at Sarejevo leads to outbreak of World War I; Austria fights on losing side.
