`…the Dutch landscape has all the qualities that make geometry so delightful. A tour in Holland is a tour through the first book of Euclid. Over a country that is the ideal plane surface of the geometry books, the roads and the canals trace out the shortest distances between point and point.'

ALDOUS HUXLEY Along the Road (1925)
Excursions from the City

Holland is a small country. From Amsterdam you can reach its furthest mainland extremities in about three hours by way of some vigorous driving or an intercity train. Within easy reach of the capital, a variety of excellent excursion options awaits you.

A mere 20 minutes by train from Centraal Station is Haarlem, a memorable city its own right, and it would be hard to imagine urban experiences more different than those offered by The Hague, Rotterdam and Utrecht. If you need to be beside water you can choose from a string of North Sea beach resorts, such as nearby Zandvoort, or the constellation of historic towns and villages encircling the IJsselmeer lake, the former Zuiderzee. You can tour around by bicycle within a fair radius of the city, or cycle to your chosen place of escape and return by train.
