Hotel Rates
Rates are for double rooms; in some hotels you get a reduction for single occupancy of a double. A 5 per cent city tax is
added to rates in 5-star hotels. Most hotels accept credit cards, though some budget hotels may ask you not to use them. In
general, only expensive hotels charge extra for breakfast. `Breakfast included' can mean anything from an excellent full,
buffet, Continental or Dutch breakfast; some budget hotels interpret `Dutch' breakfast to mean a cup of miserable coffee,
an ultra-hard-boiled egg, and a couple of thin, curly slices of cheese and ham. NOTE: All bus/tram numbers relate to trams,
unless otherwise stated
Hotel Tips Two-fifths of Amsterdam's 30,000 hotel beds are in 4- and 5-star properties, which can make things difficult for people wanting mid-range and budget accommodation, particularly at peak times such as during the spring tulip season and summer. It's always best to book ahead. If you arrive without a reservation, go to one of the VVV tourist offices which can guarantee to find you something, though it may not be in the class or area you prefer. Watch out for hidden pitfalls, such as Golden Age canalhouses with four or five floors, steep, narrow stairways, and no lifts; and tranquil-looking mansions with a late-night café terrace next door. Bijou Properties Wherever possible, the hotels listed in this section have been chosen for having something more in the way of local character than their name. This has often meant selecting hotels in old buildings, some transformed from their original purpose. There are plenty of alternatives, though, if you just want a straightforward modern hotel with few trimmings or an unpretentious budget hotel with even less. Bed and Breakfast If you are touring from Amsterdam and don't want to pre-book a hotel, you'll find lots of B&B accommodation in many areas. Either visit the local VVV tourist office, which will have a comprehensive list of establishments in its area and can book for you, or simply choose a place as you pass by. Some have `B&B' signs, but they are more usually identified by `room-free' signs in Dutch: `Kamer Vrij'; and German: `Zimmer Frei'. |
