Áreios Págos (Areopagos)
(
Worth Seeing
)
Almost opposite the Acropolis entrance, some stone steps carved in the rock next to a plaque lead up to the Areopagos. This
is where the supreme court of Athens once stood. The name means the Hill of Mars, and the legend is that here Mars (Ares to
the Greeks), the God of War, was tried for murdering one of the sons of Poseidon. It is also where Orestes stood accused of
murdering his mother, Clytemnaestra, in the Aeschylus play Eumenides. It was from the Areopagos that St Paul delivered his
sermon to the Athenians in AD 54, and the text is inscribed on the plaque near the steps. The site has open access and is
more noted for its views than for its few ancient remains.
