Ebraïkó Mouseío tis Elláthos (Jewish Museum of Greece)

( Highly Recommended )

The exhibits in this fascinating museum on the edge of the Pláka are displayed on nine levels radiating around an octagonal atrium. The ground floor contains, among other things, the restored interior of a 1920s synagogue, moved here from Patra. Themed exhibits include the ancient biblical origins of the arrival of Judaism in Greece in about the 2nd century BC, a celebration of Jewish culture and its colourful costumes and the dreadful years of the Holocaust, which completely wiped out many Greek Jewish communities, such as those in Kastoria, Crete and Drama. Only larger communities, such as those in Athens and Thessaloniki, survived, and even those only barely. A gift shop on the ground floor sells souvenirs, postcards, repicas of exhibits and a good selection of books covering Jewish history in Greece.
