Gennádios Vivliothíki (American School of Classical Studies)

( Worth Seeing )

This neo-classical building in Kolonáki houses an extensive library on Greek subjects, founded by John Gennadios and opened in 1926. It contains over 24,000 books, though its main interest to the visitor to Athens is likely to be the small collections of Byron memorabilia and Edward Lear paintings. Byron's belongings are in a small case to the far left as you enter, and include his watch and some papers. Lear's work is on display on the walls, including the gallery accessed by stairs near the entrance.
