Hephaisteion (Temple of Hephaistos)

( Do not miss )

This fine temple dominates the western side of the Agora. It is also known as the Thiseío (Theseion) - as is the surrounding area of Athens - because some of its friezes show Theseus, one of the mythical Kings of Athens and son of Aegeus, after whom the Aegean Sea is named. Hephaistos was god of fire and art as well as god of metallurgy and, just as the potters' quarter was at nearby Keramikos, so this was the blacksmiths' and metalworkers' area. The temple was built in about 449-444 BC, and the start of its construction launched the Golden Age of Pericles. It is easily the best-preserved building in the Agora, if not one of the best in all of Greece.
