Keramikí Syllogí Apo to Mouseío Elliníkis Laografías (Ceramic Collection of the Museum of Greek Folk Art)

( Do not miss )

The mosque in which this enjoyable collection is housed was built in 1759 on the site of a fountain. Since the state of Greece was founded it has been a barracks for the army band, and then a hospital. It specialises in ceramics from Greece and Cyprus from the first half of the 20th century. The 794-piece collection is part of that of Professor Vassilios Kyriazopoulos, who built it up over 50 years.
One fascinating aspect of the museum is that it tells the stories, in Greek and English, of some of the potters whose work is on display. Minas Avramides, for example, was an uneducated stonemason before becoming a potter in Thessaloniki, where his son still operates a workshop. His drawings of men, gods and beasts are primitive, but the finished plates have a colourful boldness. Avramides also designed a Greek alphabet using animal motifs. Nikolaos Yasiranis (1901-73) was from Rhodes, his father having been a clay modeller in Asia Minor, from where many of the craftsmen featured originated. The son's clay models depicting characters from folk traditions are delightful and amusing, showing a wicked eye for human nature. In the gallery upstairs are small themed collections from outside Greece, from Macedonia, Thessaly and from the islands. The colourful decorated plates from Rhodes, with their bold reds, blues and greens, are a typical example. The white, bright interior of the mosque's dome has been restored, but patches of the original, faded, painted brickwork still show through.
