Mitrópolis
(
Highly Recommended
)
Two very contrasting churches stand side by side in Mitrópolis Square. The smaller is the Mikrí Mitrópoli (Little Mitrópolis),
a 12th-century church dedicated to Ágios Eleftherios. It has a haunting cave-like atmosphere: do go in if you find it open.
It is dwarfed by its huge neighbour, the Megáli Mitrópoli (Great Mitrópolis), the Cathedral of Athens, a modern building on
the site of a monastery that stood in the square until 1827. The cathedral's main exterior feature is its fine entrance. Above
this is a mosaic of the Annunciation (Evangelismos), which gives the church its official name.
