Monastiráki
(
Do not miss
)
This small and ever-bustling square gets its name because a monastery once stood here. Anything less monastic today would
be hard to imagine. As well as the busy metro station, where commuters with their briefcases rub shoulders with housewives
visiting the markets and backpackers heading for the port of Piraeus, there are cafés and market stalls, and it's the hub
of several areas.
To the west is the Monastiráki area itself, where the Pláka souvenir shops give way to the flea market. This is busy every
day, but packed on Sunday mornings when it stretches along Ermou past the Keramikos Cemetery, making enough noise to wake
its inhabitants. Stalls sell a bewildering variety of items, from cheap clothes and shoes to expensive cameras, from stuffed
storks to souvlaki and from religious icons to pornographic videos. Visitors are advised to watch out for pickpockets, and
to allow plenty of time for a visit as the street becomes so packed it is often almost impossible to move.
To the southeast of the square is the Pláka district, and to the northwest the newly fashionable neighbourhood of Psirri,
where smart bars and restaurants are appearing among its old workshops.
