Mouseío Ellinikís Paithikis Téchnis (Museum of Greek Children's Art)

( Highly Recommended )

This smart new museum is a delightful idea, being devoted to displaying and encouraging the artistic work of Greek children, though overseas visitors with children will be equally welcomed. The museum began as a private collection of Greek children's art, which was originally on display in the Milies Museum on the Pilion peninsula, but has recently been brought to Athens and expanded. There are some enchanting displays of paintings, small sculptures and puppets, all showing the original and vivid imagination which can only come from a child. The main paintings are inspired by annual competitions on themes such as Greece and the Sea, Mother and Child, designing a Greek stamp or telling a Greek folk tale, with the winning paintings all being for sale. If you cannot afford an original, many of them have been turned into notes and postcards for sale in the small shop.
The gallery is upstairs, while downstairs are bright and lively rooms, with painting and drawing equipment and puzzles, where regular activity sessions are held. If you don't speak Greek but would like to visit or would like your child to join in, then a phone call in advance will ensure that an English-speaking helper is on hand. Other languages are not yet available, but ring to check as the museum is slowly expanding its activities - and quite rightly too.
