  Did You Know?
Ágios Nikodímos (Church of St Nikodimos)

( Worth Seeing )

The original church on this site was built in AD 1031 and was a chapel for a Roman Catholic Monastery until 1701. It was pulled down in 1780 by the Turks and the bricks used for their Athenian defensive wall. In the 1850s the present church was built by the Russian Orthodox church, and it is still in use as Athens's main Russian Orthodox church. The imposing tower outside contains a bell that was donated by Tsar Alexander II, and which still makes a sound like thunder, as you will discover if you happen to pass by when it is rung. Inside the church, in addition to icons, there is some fine Russian embroidery.
