Mouseío Kosmímatos Ilía Lalaoúnis (Ilias Lalaounis Jewellery Museum)
(
Highly Recommended
)
Ilias Lalaounis is one of the most famous of modern Athenian jewellers and goldsmiths, and a look around this museum, purpose-built
in his old workshop, will explain why. This versatile artist and craftsman takes inspiration from many sources: Mycenean,
Minoan, Byzantine, Viking, Persian and Celtic art, science and more. There are over 3,000 pieces on permanent display, beautifully
lit and well captioned in Greek, English and French. A small theatre shows a choice of six short films on his techniques and
particular collections, again in all three languages. There are also some delightful works based on designs submitted by children:
giant bees and spiders, huge ants and locusts, spaceships, comets colliding, serpents and signs of the zodiac. The museum
has a roof garden with views of the Acropolis, a café/restaurant and a well-stocked shop.
