Walk down the busy main street of Piraeus from Omonia Square and on your left you reach this under-rated modern Greek art collection, well worth knowing about if the National Gallery is closed. The gallery's building dates from 1872, when it was the Foundling Hospital, and the collection itself has been acquired since 1923. It covers a wide range of 19th- and 20th-century subjects, including evocative old street scenes and archetypal Greek landscapes, showing how the face of Greece has changed over the years. There are portraits of proud peasants, and examples of Greece's tradition of primitive artists. The collection of engravings includes works by the great masters of this art and their followers and works by young engravers.
