Prótoí Nekrotafío Athinón (First Cemetery of Athens)

( Highly Recommended )

The First Cemetery is not called that because it is the oldest, but because it is the most important cemetery. Here distinguished citizens have a right to be buried, but there is room for more ordinary monuments too. Look for a moving carving of an old man and his wife, her arm resting gently on his - an affectionate portrait of a long married couple. One of the graves most interesting to visitors is that of the archaeologist Heinrich Schliemann. It can be found on a small mound beyond the chapel, which is to the left as you enter. Schliemann's tomb was designed by his architect friend Ernst Ziller, who also designed the Presidential Palace, Olympic Stadium, Schliemann's House and other distinguished build ings in Athens. Also in the First Cemetery is the tomb of Theodoros Kolokotronis, the guerrilla leader hero of the Greek War of Independence, and prominent modern citizens, such as the actress/politician Melina Mercouri.
