Vivliothíki Adrianoú (Library of Hadrian)

( Worth Seeing )

This group of buildings, near the Agora, was built by Emperor Hadrian sometime after AD 132 to house his library, but the building design incorporated a walled courtyard around a central garden and pool. This may sound modest, and today's ruins might suggest that was the case, but it was an extensive building - the largest that Hadrian built in Athens - and the courtyard contained 100 columns. It has unfortunately been closed to the public for some time while thorough excavations are undertaken. When eventually reopened, it should be possible to for visitors to inspect the library, with its recesses for the rolled manuscripts of books.
