Athenian Flavors

Sitting at a shady café table, lingering over a gargantuan lunch, munching sunflower seeds, melon, pistachio and pine nuts, or eating ice cream as you stroll on balmy evenings are true Athenian pleasures.

In a country where hospitality to strangers is one of the bedrock rules of society, it's not surprising that eating and drinking socially play an important role. Eating establishments are known as estiatorio (restaurants) or tavernas (less expensive, simpler and often family-run).

Greek food is delicious and healthy - fresh salads with feta cheese and olives, fantastic hors d'oeuvres (mezédhes), grilled meats, moussakas, and tasty stews and vegetables, washed down with retsina, the barrel-stored, pine-resonated white wine.

Dessert is normally fresh local fruit; if you want something sweeter, head for a zaharoplastío, a café serving the honey-soaked pastries much loved by the Greeks.
