Ceramics and Honey

There's a wide range of shopping in Athens, from international labels to traditional Greek products. In Kolonáki and on and around Ermoú Street, the smartest retail areas, you'll find familiar merchandise.

Ethnic buys are another matter, with much to hunt down around Pláka and vicinity. Leather and woolen goods, traditional ceramics and tapestries, felt slippers, fruity olive oil, honey and pistachios are all excellent buys. For something special, check out jewelry or religious stores; Greece has a long tradition of fine gold craftsmanship, and traditional icons are still made. Watch for Athens' kiosks (períptera) - much more than newsstands, they sell everything from snacks and drinks to bus tickets, simple medicines and telephone cards. In central Athens many are open 24 hours a day.
