The collection, once the private property of the shipowning Goulandris family, dates from the Cycladic civilization, which flourished on the Greek islands from 3000 until 2000 BC. The figures, carved from local marble, could be taken for 20th-century work; elegant and minimalist, yet full of powerful feeling.
