HEALTH

Insurance

British and certain other nationals are eligible for free basic care at public hospitals but it is strongly recommended that all travellers take out a comprehensive medical insurance policy.

Dental Services

Dentists are plentiful and the standard of treatment is high - as are the bills. In an emergency go to the casualty wing of a local hospital, or locate a dentist from the local telephone book. Medical insurance is essential.

Sun Advice

The sun in Australia is extremely strong, especially in summer. Wear a hat to protect your face and neck and avoid sunbathing in the middle of the day. Use a high-factor sun screen.

Drugs

Prescription and non-prescription drugs are available from chemists or pharmacies. Visitors may import up to four weeks supply of prescribed medication: bring a doctor's certificate.

Safe Water

It is safe to drink tap water throughout Australia. Bottled mineral water is available throughout the country.
