Albany

( Highly Recommended )

Now a scenic holiday resort, Albany was Western Australia's first settlement. Founded three years before Perth, the town developed into a port and whaling centre - the old whaling station is now the fascinating Whaleworld museum, and there is whale watching here from August to October. This attractive town contains the 1850s Residency and Old Gaol, both now museums. The coastline and beaches are spectacular, and you should also visit the rugged mountain country of Stirling Range National Park, which lies 100km inland.
